Depressed people experience low mood, loss of interest and enjoyment in daily activities, reduced energy and impaired daily functioning. There are a range of associated emotional, cognitive, physical and behavioural symptoms which can be categorised according to the five areas of the Cognitive-Behavioural Model (CBM).
Using behavioural activation to overcome depression
One of the most effective strategies for overcoming depression using 10 Minute CBT is to make positive behavioural changes. Encourage patients to increase activity levels despite tiredness or lack of motivation. By behaving ‘as if’ they are less depressed, their mood will slowly start to lift.
Activities should be enjoyable or meaningful, ideally planned in advance and based on the patient’s own interests and life goals. It is important to focus on taking one step at a time, aiming for small, achievable goals to build confidence.
