Cognitive behavioural model (CBM)
The Cognitive-Behavioural Model (CBM), or five areas model, breaks down problems into five areas, each of which contribute to the development and maintenance of problems such as depression and anxiety. These areas are:
- Feelings and emotions
- Physical symptoms
- Environment and background factors
The model acts as a simple and effective framework for both professional and patient to understand and make sense of their problems and difficulties. It provides a foundation for starting to identify vicious cycles and helps people to find their own possible solutions and ideas for change.
