Medically unexplained symptoms and health anxiety

WORKSHOP OVERVIEW

One day workshop

Patients with health anxiety are often frequent attenders in primary care and many other health services but can be difficult to manage and treat effectively.  The difficulty posed by managing these complex cases often represents a major source of stress for health professionals.  There is growing evidence that health anxiety and medically unexplained symptoms can be effectively treated with CBT.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

PROVISIONAL PROGRAMME

By attending this one-day workshop, participants will:

  • Learn about the CBT approach to health anxiety and medically unexplained symptoms and how health professionals may be involved in its development
  • Discover new ways to cope with the stress and anxiety (‘heartsink’) that can arise within health professionals when faced by challenging patients
  • Improve relationships with health anxious or frequently attending patients
  • Learn how to engage patients in the CBT approach
  • Encourage patients to adopt positive coping strategies to accept and manage their unpleasant physical symptoms
  • Encourage patients to reduce their focus on health issues and take values-based actions that improve wellbeing and quality of life

This introductory 10 Minute CBT workshop is suitable for a wide range of health professionals and other practitioners who work with people experiencing medically unexplained symptoms, functional disorders, experience somatic symptoms and anxiety about their health.   This includes GPs, nurses and nurse practitioners, hospital specialists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists.

The training is suitable for people with little or no background or training in CBT, as well as those with more experience of CBT who wish to learn how to adapt CBT training to the 10 Minute setting.
