Why is CBT Important?

CBT is a the most effective ‘talking therapy’ for depression and anxiety

CBT has been shown to be as effective as anti-depressants for treating depression in the short-term and is more effective at preventing relapse. Because of its proven efficacy, the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) recommend that everyone should be offered CBT as the first-line treatment for depression and anxiety problems, as an alternative to antidepressant treatment.

Access to CBT is limited in many areas of the UK

At present, for much of the UK, access to CBT services via the NHS is limited, with many regions having long waiting lists.

The government has recognised the importance of CBT services and is in the process of rolling out the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) programme . This involves an investment of over £70 million as part of an exciting national programme of new CBT services throughout the UK. There will be increased recruitment and training of new CBT therapists to regional CBT centres which will improve access to CBT services for many patients.

Developing a cohesive service across disciplines

As patients become more aware of the importance of CBT, it will become increasingly important for all health care professionals to have a greater understanding and knowledge of CBT principles.

10 Minute CBT will become an increasingly important strategy that will enable a cohesive, ‘joined up’ approach to offering holistic mental health care across disciplines. It will be particularly important for certain vulnerable groups of patients who may be less likely to engage with psychological services.

Our training fits within the spectrum of CBT-based psycholgocial interventions, which includes standard CBT, computerised CBT (CCBT), exercise, guided self-help and bibliotherapy (written CBT self-help books).
