Basic Principles of CBT

What is CBT?

The basic principle of CBT is that the way we think in specific situations affects how we feel emotionally and physically, and alters our behaviour.

CBT helps people to make sense of their own individual reactions to a particular event or situation.  No one reaction is right or wrong, but some responses will be more positive and helpful, and others can worsen problems by producing a vicious cycle.

For example, if someone feels depressed or low, they may give up, withdraw or reduce activity when faced by a new challenge at work or by a new diagnosis of a health condition.  This behaviour simply worsens mood and further reduces confidence and self-esteem over time.

Breaking vicious cycles with CBT

By using CBT to change any unhelpful thinking styles or behaviour, people are able to improve emotional symptoms such as low mood, and are enabled to find ways to live fulfilling lives according to their own values and needs.
