10 Minute CBT in Primary Care

The vast majority of mental health care is provided within primary care. It is therefore essential that GPs and all other members of the primary healthcare team feel confident in diagnosing and managing common emotional disorders such as depression and anxiety disorders.

Training for GPs

10 Minute CBT has been developed with the busy GP in mind. Our aim is to improve GPs’ confidence and skills in managing emotional disorders within existing consultation time.

Most GPs are highly skilled communicators who have undergone extensive training in using a variety of patient-centred consultation models. The 10 Minute CBT approach builds upon commonly used skills in general practice, such as using open questions, summarizing, identifying health beliefs and hand-over, but offers an additional structure to apply the skills effectively to understand and change common emotional problems.

We have discovered that both experienced GPs and GP Registrars are able to learn useful skills from 10 Minute CBT training workshops. Experienced GPs can add to their existing repertoire of skills. GPs in training are able to identify and learn new skills for managing mental health problems as well as difficult or ‘heartsink’ patients.

Other primary healthcare professionals

Mental health care and managing long-term conditions is increasingly being managed by the entire primary health care team.

10 Minute CBT training is useful relevant for practice nurses, health visitors, community nurses, community matrons and community psychiatric nurses.

Facts about depression

Depression is the third most common reason for consultation in UK general practice.

Depression will be second only to ischaemic heart disease as the leading cause of disability / disease worldwide by 2020

People with mental disorders consult GPs more often and almost 25% of GP consultations are attributable to psychiatric morbidity

5-10% of patients seen in primary care have major depression and 2-3x more show depressive symptoms but do not meet diagnostic criteria for major depression

Around half of depressed people in the community do not even visit the GP and at least 2/3 of those who do see a GP present with physical or somatic rather than psychological symptoms.
